10:25, Dominic Booth23 mins: Again the high press pays dividends for Switzerland, but the quality in the final third has been lacking so far. 10:21, Dominic Booth21 mins: Cameroon are making a few mistakes in possesion as a result of the Swiss press. It’s also a product of their desire to play direct towards Choupo-Moting, rather than play out from the back. 10:18, Dominic Booth18 mins: You get the feeling Cameroon might be quite fun to watch in this tournament. Anguissa is standing out in midfield and Choupo-Moting is a livewire up top. Looks like the pattern of this game is going to be Swiss possession and then counter-attacks from Cameroon. Second big Cameroon chance10:15, Dominic Booth15 mins: Choupo-Moting nicks the ball of Man City defender Akanji and he’s through again...
Rigobert Song will be happy with what he’s see from his team thus far. (Getty Images)10:25, Dominic Booth23 mins: Again the high press pays dividends for Switzerland, but the quality in the final third has been lacking so far. Cameroon win it back and quickly counter. Mbeumo jinks across the defence and in the end it’s a corner.
They eventually took the lead as Embolo netted against the country of his birth, refusing to celebrate as a mark of respect. Cameroon struggled from that point on to get back in the game and Murat Yakin’s side saw out a 1-0 victory that will stand them in good stead ahead of tricky group games to come, against Brazil and Serbia. Standard Sport’s LIVE coverage of the World Cup Group G game below with our dedicated match blog covered every kick.
Here’s the link to Standard Sport’s match report (Getty Images)FULL TIME: 1-0 Switzerland11:56, Dominic BoothCameroon have just lacked a bit of quality in the final third since they went behind. Their best moments came in the first half, and they’ll rue not taking any of those early chances. Seferovic shimmies through and has a golden opportunity to make it 2-0 deep in injury time. It’s blocked, but it won’t matter, this is a 1-0 victory for the Swiss.
Hardly a surprise to see them being introduced, as two senior fowards, and they’re doing it just in time for a corner kick. Choupo-Moting will come off and pass the armband to Aboubakar, while Toko Ekambi is the other man replaced. Triple Switzerland sub11:32, Dominic Booth72 mins: Three subs are coming on for the Swiss. Seferovic, Frei and Okafor are all introduced. Sow, Shaqiri and Embolo are the men replaced. Perhaps a surprise to see some star names sacrificed at this stage, Embolo was especially threatening going forward.
First half thoughts10:54, Dominic BoothNo doubt the critics will pour in for another goalless half at this World Cup, but this has been fairly enjoyable fair so far. Cameroon are thrilling to watch with their direct counter-attacking side, while Switzerland are by no means short of quality and have created two big headed chances from set pieces. We can expect a lively second half for sure. HALF TIME - Switzerland 0-0 Cameroon10:49, Dominic BoothCameroon got the chance to whip in a free-kick late in the half, which was harmless enough and collected by Sommer.
(Getty Images)11:52, Dominic Booth93 mins: A piece of slightly comical defending from Nkoulou, looking to chase back and stop the Swiss counter-attack, as he slips and concedes a corner. This will game Rieder the chance to take a short corner and keep the ball in that area of the pitch. Added time11:50, Dominic Booth90 mins: Another change for Switzerland as Comert replaced Rodriguez, a fairly defensive change. And it’s only the six added minutes. Last chance saloon for Cameroon. 11:48, Dominic Booth89 mins: A decent save from Onana to stop a fizzing, trademark shot from Xhaka. 11:46, Dominic Booth86 mins: Cameroon don’t look particularly likely to get an equaliser at the moment. Not sure why Choupo-Moting went off, he was their most dangerous player.
A watchable 45 minutes of football, but we’re goalless. (Getty Images)10:47, Dominic Booth46 mins: Varga again takes the right-footed corner crom the left and it’s a gaping chance for Akanji. How on earth has he headed that wide? Big miss. Added time10:46, Dominic Booth45 mins: It’s been a fairly stoppage-free half of football, so we’ll have a fairly normal amount of added time.
It’s all Switzerland. (Getty Images)11:24, Dominic Booth65 mins: Elvedi is the recepient of the game’s second yellow card. A clear tug on the shirt of Choupo-Moting, probably a clever foul in truth. Both sides are readying substitutions. 11:23, Dominic Booth64 mins: Vargas sends in another corner – the Swiss have been dangerous from set pieces today – but nothing is doing from this one. 11:22, Dominic Booth63 mins: Shaqiri drives Switzerland forward on the break and has acres of space to pick his pass, but somehow Cameroon survive and Hongla starts running though the middle after latching onto the clearance. End to end stuff, as Embolo does the same and sets up Vargas, who is forced wide and wins a corner.
11:20, Dominic Booth60 mins: Some wayward passing is creeping into the game from both sides. Cameroon have got quite frantic and frustrated since the goal, while Switzerland seem eager to get a second and put it to bed. Still a long way to go, with both teams keen to change the current status quo. 11:17, Dominic Booth57 mins: That’s genius play from Choupo-Moting, dancing his way into the box and seeing his effort blocked by Sommer from an acute angle.
Akanji comes back and puts a bit of pressure on the Bayern Munich man and he cannot steer it beyond Sommer. Should be 1-0 to Cameroon! 10:14, Dominic Booth13 mins: Penalty appeals from Switzerland after Vargas starts an attack down the left and it ends with Embolo being shoved from behind. The offside flag went up anyway, so nothing doing. (Getty Images)10:12, Dominic Booth12 mins: Arsenal fans will be familiar with that sight... Granit Xhaka shooting from (very) long range. This effort isn’t troubling Onana’s goal at all. First big chance! 10:11, Dominic Booth10 mins: Wow that’s a huge double chance for Cameroon! Choupo-Moting is played clean through down the inside left channel and sees his shot saved by Sommer.
10:35, Dominic Booth34 mins: Onana isn’t troubled by a slightly aimless cross from Shaqiri, which sums up how Switzerland have performed in the past 15 or 20 minutes. Cameroon have fashioned the better chances by far... and there’s another as Toko-Ekambi tries to get onto a cross from the right by Fai Collins. Widmer did enough. Just. 10:33, Dominic Booth32 mins: More nice interplay from Cameroon.
They’re now the side enjoying more possesion, and they have the potency to go with it. Castelletto’s raking cross is nodded away. This time the Swiss are on the counter, and Widmer’s cutback is scrambled clear by the green shirts. 10:31, Dominic Booth30 mins: Choupo-Moting and Anguissa really are a potent combination for Cameroon. Some of their link up play is lovely, as the African side fashion another chance, Mbeumo trying to guide it across goal with his left foot. Sommer parries it out for another corner, which gets cleared after a melee. 10:27, Dominic Booth27 mins: Toko-Ekambi finding space on the left, with Cameroon looking dangerous nearly every time they come forward. Right-back Fai Collins has a pop from distance but it’s some distance over the crossbar.
First sub11:28, Dominic Booth69 mins: Here comes the Cameroon change, as Hongla is replaced by Ondoua. A like-for-like change in midfield, really. Nearly another11:27, Dominic Booth67 mins: Mbeumo’s free-kick finds the head of Anguissa but it’s a fairly tame effort, albeit on target. At the other end, Switzerland produce a near carbon copy of the Embolo goal, with Vargas forcing Onana into a superb save following a cut-back from the right flank. The resulting corner produces yet another big opening, with Anguissa clearing over his own bar, taking it off Embolo’s feet.
